The People Decide, What Doesn't Lieberman Understand About That?

What doesn't the Democratic Establishment get about it either?

O
n NPR's Morning Edition today a supporter of Joe Lieberman, a state senator no less, claimed that he was still a Democrat. Joe Lieberman can be counted on to repeatedly make the same claim himself, especially if reason rules and the new opponent to the duly chosen Democratic candidate for the Senate seat in Connecticut is replaced by the Democratic leadership in the Senate on committees and for other assignments. But saying so doesn'’t make it so.

No, Joe Lieberman stopped being a Democrat last night when he not only refused to support the legitimately chosen Democratic candidate for the Senate but chose to act as a spoiler in the general election. So, he continues on the path he chose a decade ago of smoothing the way for Republicans. In deed, Lieberman stopped being a reliable Democrat years ago. Last night just made it an undeniable fact that he isn'’t one.

A person who chooses to enroll in the Democratic Party has few demands put on them. There is no Democratic ideology that they are required to swear to. But a person who chooses to take out papers and run as a Democratic candidate does take on obligations to the members of the party. First and foremost they have an obligation to support the will of the majority of Democratic Voters in their choice of candidates. You don'’t get to say to the majority of Voters who, legitimately, according to the agreed upon rules, say that they think another candidate should have the nomination that their choice isn't the right one. Once the would be candidate takes out papers for the nomination that must be a settled question. But, as in so many other cases, Joe Liberman insists that the rules don't apply to him.

Since Joe Lieberman is acting as a spoiler in the Senate race it is absolutely essential that from now on Democrats who take out papers to run for nominations be required to sign a clear statement that they will follow that most basic of all rules of democracy, that the voice of the People is the voice of God.

Once the choice of registered Democrats is made for a nomination, the loser will support that candidate or at the very least not run against them. Nothing short of a written contract will do it.

After Lieberman it is clear that this can't be left to a gentleman'’s agreement, a rule followed out of honor. Unfortunately some of our office holders have no honor.

The Democrats of Connecticut have given Joe Lieberman his career in politics, he owes them everything he's gotten in office. He owes the Democratic Party for its Vice Presidential nomination and the fact that he can gratify his insatiable desire to get his face on camera. If there were no Democrats for him to slam on cue he'’d be just another boring and little known politician in Washington DC.

After Joe announced that he'd run as an Independent if he lost the primary - Patrick Leahy made a statement saying that Joe had a special responsibility, because he was the Democratic nominee - to play by the rules.

Yesterday, after watching his interview on the News Hour, I realized how true those words were - Joe looks like a spoiled, entitled brat who will get his way one way or another - and the hell with the Democratic party!!!

He should be forced to stop calling himself an "Independent Democrat". The word "Democrat" no longer applies.

Leftydem, wouldn't you think that Democrats should at least be allowed to keep people who are betraying us at this, most basic, level to throw someone out?

Democrats in the United States in 2006 aren't even allowed to disavow people who run against our candidates. When it comes to the treatment of Democrats it isn't just a double standard, anything anyone does against us is allowed.
